Family beaches in Liguria

Shallow seabed, fine sand or pebbles, services reachable without steps. These are the criteria used to select the beaches on this list. For each one you will also find the drawback that is usually left unmentioned.

How we select

Three things, in order of importance: the seabed, which should slope gently for at least ten metres before getting deep; the distance to services, with toilets and drinking water within two hundred metres; and step-free access, because a pushchair changes everything. If you are travelling with young children, prioritise the Ponente Riviera: more sand, shallow water and wide beaches. The Levante is spectacular but rocky and drops deep quickly, less convenient with children under six. Beaches in July and August fill up early: arrive by 9:30 am to find a spot on free beaches. At lidos it is worth booking a sunbed the day before, especially in August.

Frequently asked questions

Ponente or Levante with children?

Ponente, in most cases. More sand, shallow water and wide beaches, ideal for keeping an eye on small children. The Levante is rocky and drops deep quickly: spectacular but less practical with children under six.

Do lidos rent by half-day?

Many do, usually from 2 pm, but rarely in August when demand is high. Call the day before: contact details are in each beach's profile.

Is there natural shade on these beaches?

Almost never on open sand, where an umbrella is essential. Some sheltered corners exist in rocky coves in the early afternoon, but for children it is still worth bringing shade and arriving early to stay near facilities.
