The best beaches in Liguria

We have explored them all, from the organised lidos of Alassio to the coves you can only reach by swimming. Here you will find the ones worth the trip, divided by zone and type.

by Liguria Segreta Team

Liguria has 350 kilometres of coastline with two very different characters. To the west, the Savona Riviera has the region's longest sandy stretch: wide bays like Varigotti, family-friendly lidos, and a train that runs right along the sea. To the east, rock and pebbles dominate, with hidden coves and the dramatic scenery of the Cinque Terre, where sometimes the only way to get into the water is by boat. Below we have divided them by zone, so you can find the right one for your day straight away.

Before you go

Which is the most beautiful beach in Liguria?

It depends on what you are looking for. For sand and shallow water, Baia dei Saraceni at Varigotti; for scenery, San Fruttuoso; for facilities, Alassio. In the guide you will find the criteria we use to judge.

Where can I find free beaches in July and August?

They exist, but you need to arrive early: by 9:30 am at weekends. The largest are the Spiaggione di Corniglia and the beach at Quinto in Genoa.

Which beaches can only be reached by boat?

Guvano (Vernazza) and some coves at Punta Manara. San Fruttuoso also has a footpath, but the ferry from Camogli is the most convenient option.

Do free beaches have facilities?

Very few: on free beaches bring your own umbrella, water and water shoes where there are pebbles. Full facilities are available at lidos or in the central stretches of seaside towns like Noli or Spotorno.
