At summer weekends (July-August) book at least two days ahead, especially seafood restaurants on the harbour or seafront. On weekdays and in low season many places accept walk-ins without a problem.

In neighbourhood trattorias that have been open for decades, not in harbour-front restaurants with a tourist menu. Look for handmade trofie al pesto, focaccia di Recco (if you are in the Genoa area), farinata and vegetable tarts. The pesto tastes completely different when they use DOP basil from Pra'.
